You know up at the top of the blog where it says “What Happened?”. Well, I wanted that to display another link, but only some of the time. So, I used the rand() function in PHP. Want to learn how to do this yourself? Read ahead. (more…)

Database Problem

Just to let everyone know, I had a slight database problem with the posts for the past couple of days. The ID numbers for posts will be a bit out of order.

A short story…

Hello faithful blog readers!

As you may have seen in the past, I have posted about “My Social Network”. This “social network” is not really a “social network”. In fact, it it quite different. “My Social Network” (From now on referred to as “TQP”), is a place that I threw together in about 2 days to post funny quotes that people had said (sometimes on purpose, sometimes on accident). My friend (Aldrich) and I (Jeff) got the great idea to start something small on the web, a place to call our own. However, first we had to find a few other people to do this with. The other two people are Christian and Nate, two of our closest friends. Since we had the first version of TQP done, we saw that a website with no style sheet and barely any security was not going to do the job correctly. Enter: Beta 2. Beta 2 is what TQP currently runs, for fears of security flaws in Beta 3 (we’ll get to this later). Beta 2 was a complete re-coding of our website. It had a CSS style sheet, and some new ideas, like a chat box, and very, very simple profiles. This website served us well, and provided us with the thirty-some users that we have today. The End. Not.

I decided that I wanted TQP to be something more. Something were the local townsfolk could come to visit with their friends, and share their thoughts. Beta 3, codenamed “The Social Butterfly”, was created. Beta 3 offers profiles (similar to MySpace), where you can share your feelings, comment, and play games, videos and music. It also offers an API, however the API is only for people that have worked with us for a considerable amount of time.

I know that seems like a considerable amount of work to get done in a short amount of time, and you’re right. Beta 3 isn’t ready for public consumption yet. It has huge security holes, and not all of the features are finished (to tell you the truth, some of them aren’t even started… ;-) ).

Now that you have the complete story of this, a short word to the great people at teen4m: You are creating the future. Your social network will be a great thing, when its finished, and I hope you succeed. However, I wish you would stop saying that “You’re a complete rip of Teen4m”, or “Stop copying Network467″. I am in no way trying to copy your “network” of websites. I am creating something for our local towns/schools, that will never be marketed to other areas. It is in no way meant to rip off Teen4m or take away users from you. I am not going to get mad about this, there is nothing wrong with what I am doing. However, I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, and hope you succeed in life. One more thing, I will admit that I wanted to help on teen4m at one point in time. However, that has nothing to do with TQP, and I am not creating it to spite you.

If you would like to see this website for any reason, please drop an email to jeff@old-computer.org with the reason why you would like to see it, and your name and valid email address.

What a post…

New Coding Project: Simple-BB

Fourm software is easy to come by. The highest praised forum software, In my opinion, is PHPBB. PHPBB has a ton of features, and runs smoothly on almost any server.

I don’t claim to be anywhere near as capable as the coders of PHPBB, but I would like to create my own little entry into the forum software world. (Let it be known: before anyone says I’m copying them, I’m not.) Simple-BB, is my own PHP forum software. Currently, it runs off of MySQL, however, in the future, I plan to use flat text files to let it be able to run on a lot of servers.

It should be avaiable soon at http://old-computer.org/projects

You may have seen in the past that I have given links to my Directory Listing Script. Well, instead of using those links, from now on you can just go to http://old-computer.org/projects to access everything that I code for the public. Have fun!
