Tribute to the iMac

It was a bright, sunny day in Cupertino as Steve Jobs happily applied the shipping label to the first iMac and handed it to the UPS man. Well, maybe it went something like sweat shop workers in China produced a ton of the things and sent em off on a huge boat over the ocean to the USA. But either way, 10 years ago today the first iMac was opened and used by a consumer. Here’s to the iMac, and it’s wonderful history (and commercials)!

1998: The first iMac (G3)

When it first shipped, it was only Bondi Blue. However, over the years, it was released in a variety of colors. This machine was a drastic move for Apple, and proved successful. In 1999, the optical drive was updated to a slot loading version, and the hardware was updated a bit. The first iMac shipped with a 4GB HDD, 32MB of RAM, a 233mhz PPC G3 processor, and Mac OS 8.1. The slot-loading version shipped with a 6-13GB HDD, 64 or 128MB of RAM, a 350mhz PPC G3 processor, and Mac OS 8.6. It was later avaiable with better specs, before being discontinued in March 2003. Here are all of the colors it eventually was avaiable in:

2004: The iMac G4

The iMac G4 was a great design revolution by apple. It featured (obviously) G4 chips, and an LCD display. Until it was discontinued in August 2004, it had 15-20″ displays, and up to 1.25GHz PPC G4 processors. This is by far my favorite iMac design.

2004: The iMac G5

The iMac G5 was a great new computer that, like the G3, incorporated all of the computers components (HDD, CPU, ect.) into the monitor (a flat panel with the G5). The design of the G5 changed a bit during its lifetime, and eventually included a built in iSight camera. The G5 version of this iMac was discontinued in early 2006.

Is this the correct commercial? If not, email jeff@old-computer.org or leave a comment.

2006: The intel iMac

There have been 2 designs of the intel iMac. The first was the same as the iMac G5 (with the iSight). In 2007, the design was updated to an Aluminum and Glass version. These iMacs featured Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors with speeds avaiable over 3GHz.

Well, hopefully you learned something from this! Most of my information and pictures came from wikipedia.

  • yeah. according to my iBook and it’s current power adapter head inside of the port, apple is stupid. I mean, come on.. they kept that power adapter design since 1993, until 2006. How retarded can they be?

Hmm, did you notice that the mouse is on the left side of the keyboard on the Intel iMac (Not to be confused with the G5)? On Apples site and everywhere else I’ve seen its always on the right…(you can find it in the You Tube Video at 0:25)
