Well, Apple is going to pull the plug on lala. (For those of you who don’t know, lala let you stream your music library anywhere on the internet, along with buying $.10 “web songs” that had unlimited online plays.) On May 31st, Lala will cease to exist. Whether or not Apple merges lala’s services in with iTunes is yet to be seen, but for those of you who don’t care or don’t want to wait, I present to you an alternative. Grooveshark (http://grooveshark.com). Grooveshark lets you upload your MP3 library, or stream any song just by searching. And the good news is that (if you don’t mind the not-so-intrusive ad) it’s free! So go and check it out! Also, they offer a $3/month ($30/yr) VIP subscription that offers, among other things, streaming to your phone (Jailbroken iPod OS, Blackberry [excluding storm], Android, and Palm OS) and last.fm scrobbing.

(And no, I didn’t get paid for this post!)

So, I installed Windows 7 x64, figuring that Apple would allow me to install the 64 bit drivers on my Macbook. I was wrong.

When you insert the (snow) Leopard DVD, it gives you a message along the lines of “you don’t own an expensive enough Mac to use 64 bit Windows”. So, with a little fancy Googling, I found a workaround.

It is confirmed working with the Snow Leopard DVD also.

Open the start menu and type in “cmd”. Right click on the result and select run as administrator.

Then type in:

D:

cd “Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple”

msiexec /i BootCamp64.msi

There! If you have done everything correctly, you should be on your way to installing the 64 bit drivers!

Hello, fellow old-computerians! I am here today to bring you another iPhone/iPod Touch App Store review. This time I’ll be reviewing Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster Rush, brought to you by Digital Chocolate! This app retails for $4.99, and is rated 4+ by the App Store Elves.

Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster Rush (J3RR, for short) brings us the 3rd variation in the Rollercoaster Rush family (2 of which were 3D). It can be controlled by your thumb on the slider (backwords for break, forwards for speed), or by using the accelerometer (left for break, right for speed). The controls are, overall, easy to use. The game has it’s own in-game music, however it has a horrible bit rate. I strongly suggest playing your own music while playing this game.

When you first start on a track, you work towards impressing the rollercoaster’s riders. You need to reach a certain number of laughs (or screams, I really don’t know the official name) which will earn you a star. Your goal is to get 3 stars by the end of the course. While going through the course, you can lose cars by driving too wildly. If you lose all of your cars, you restart the track.

After completing the track (and hopefully getting 3 stars, although it’s not a necessity), you have the option to race a ghost on the track. Your (sometimes difficult) goal is to beat the ghost to the end of the track.

There is also a bluetooth multiplayer mode in the game, however I couldn’t test it, as I have an iPhone 2G.

Even with the extra modes (such as multiplayer or ghost), this game seems way too short, especially at the price of $4.99. Also, the levels are usually very easy (normally it won’t take more than 2 trys to get through). I wouldn’t suggest buying this game.

Pros:

Fun, while it lasted.

3D.

Cons:

Horrible quality music.

Short play time (~3 hrs).

$4.99.

Neutral:

Levels are very, very easy.

Rating: 4/10

Hey everyone. It’s been a while since my last post, but I’m back to bore you with my ramblings again. This time, I’m reviewing a game from the Apple App Store for the iPhone/iPod Touch, called Minigore. Minigore was created by Chillingo Ltd, and costs $.99. The game is rated 9+ by Apple.

Minigore is a very simple shooter, where you play the character John Gore, who is on a quest to kill a bunch of furries (they come in 3 sizes). There is only one forest map, making the game very simple to play, but incredibly addicting. The game looks great (it has a storybook art style), and has one of the best control schemes I’ve seen on the iPhone. There are 2 virtual control sticks, one of which controls movement, while the other controls the weapon (more on those later). You can use both sticks at the same time, moving in one direction while shooting in another, something other games don’t let you do.

Minigore Controls.

The weapons in the game are fairly simple. You are equipped with a machine gun by default, which has unlimited ammo. As you kill furries, you collect little clovers (well, that’s what I call them). After collecting 3 of them, you get a shotgun, which can shoot 2 shells at a time and has a limited amount of ammo. You will be unlock a couple of things, like a helper (in episode 4), but the game is simple – you keep killing furries until you get bitten twice.

John Gore, chased by a few medium furries.

Overall, I would suggest minigore. It’s only a buck, and you can get lots of entertainment out of it.

Also, Episode 2 has been submitted to apple, and is going to contain a furrie locater, extra bite resistance (3 instead of 2), and the ability to restore playing where you left off.

Pros:

Fun Gameplay

Good controls

Addicting

Cons:

Single Map

Nothing extra to do becides kill furries

Rating: 8/10

Well, today when I was using my mac, I needed a good utility to Un-RAR some files that I downloaded. Here, I have listed my 5 most favorite un-rarers. To test the power of these programs, I timed the extraction of a 545.5MB Windows XP installation image, which was placed in a RAR. All tests were done on my 2.0GHz Aluminum Unibody Macbook.

5. Jomic

Test Time: 0:37

Jomic is a comic book reader. However, it allows you to extract files from an RAR, and it is quite speedy at it for something it wasn’t designed to do.

4. The Unarchiver

Test Time: 0:30

This program offers a simple interface and a wide range of compatibility, but sometimes fails to do the job correctly.

3. Stuffit Expander

Test Time: 0:34

This program is simple to use and is compatible with several formats, however once in a while it won’t extract a file that one of the apps below will.

2. UnRarX

Test Time: 0:34

This is my 2nd choice, as it is simple, has a good interface, and gets the job done.

1. SimplyRAR (v 1.09 w/ rar v 3.90 beta 2)

Test Time: 0:33

SimplyRAR is my personal favorite extraction program. It resembles WinRAR very closely, and works very well at extracting and building RAR files. The time with the readily available version, 1.09, was significantly slower than any of the other programs, but when I upgraded the rar version inside of the .app package, it sped up to 2nd place.

Well, my “social networking” site turns one year old on January 25th. And to celebrate, I (and the other staff) decided to do a redesign of the site. If you know the URL of my site, feel free to head on over and take a peek when the new design launches on the 25th, sometime around 3pm est.
